Leonard Morton Prince was born in Bloomington, Illinois on May 4, 1867, son of Ezra M. and Barbara Maria Miller Prince.

He graduated from ward schools and then from the University High School in Normal, Illinois. He attended Wharton school of finance for a year and then secured an appointment as a cadet in the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from that institution in June, 1893, and was assigned as Lieutenant in Company H. Second United States Infantry.

Lieutenant Prince quickly displayed the qualities of a good soldier and commanding officer. His superiors looked upon him as one of the most promising officers in the army, and his promotions would doubtless have come to him in rapid succession.

But unfortunately an accident cut short his career. During his academy days at West Point he had played football, which was a comparatively new sport at the time. Accordingly, when he had secured a regular appointment with a regiment, he started a movement for athletic training for the men under his command. It was while practicing with his men that he received an injury in his side. This prove incapable of control and finally caused his death on November 1, 1895 at Chicago, Illinois.

He was an intelligent, practical, zealous and efficient officer of exemplary habits.

Leonard Morton Prince married Hannah Nell Hobart and she along with a son Leonard Prince survived his death.

His funeral and burial were held on November 3, 1895.
