The monument is for both the 78th and the 102nd.

The 78th New York was commanded by Lt Col Herbert Von Hammerstein, while the 102nd was commanded by Col James C Lane. When Lane was wounded, Capt Lewis R Stegman took command. Capt John Meade and Adjutant J V Upham and 3 enlisted men were lost. Fifteen men were wounded and 8 men missing out of the original 248 men.

The regiments fought side by side, and were consolidated into the 102nd in July of 1864 due to their high number of casualties.
