Bates County Democrat, Thursday, March 23, 1916 - "DEATH OF JOHN F. HERRELL. Well Known Citizen Passed Away at 5 o'clock Saturday Morning.. At 5 0'clock Saturday morning, March 18, 1916, John F. Herrell on West Ohio street, after an illness lasting over several months. For the past two years Mr. Herrell had been a sufferer at time from heart and stomach trouble, and a few weeks ago had to give up active business life and practically retire. Two weeks ago his illness became an alarming character and his condition gradually grew worse. He fought a good fight, and although at times suffering greatly he never lost hope and retained his cheerful disposition to the end. John F. Herrell was a native of Butler, having been born here January 26, 1857, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Herrell, pioneer citizen of Bates county. October 23, 1878, he was married to Miss Maria Burner, and to this union were born one son and one daughter, George Herrell and Mrs. Etta Jenkins, both living at Adrian. An adopted daughter, Miss Eva Herrell, is also left to mourn with the other sorrowing members of the family. Mr. Herrell's other immediate relatives are a brother, William Herrell of Johnstown, and a sister, Mrs. S.A. Lotterer, of Fort Scott, Kansas. Politically, Mr. Herrell was always a working Democrat and in 1902 he was nominated and elected as county clerk, serving one term of four years. He lived for a few years in Adrian, where he was engaged in business, and served there a a member of the board of education. At the time of his death he was a member of the Butler city council. Mr. Herrell was a man of strong likes and dislikes, but was always fair and impartial in his judgment of and dealings with his fellow men. He was courteous and kind and a good citizen in all respects. He had been a member of the Butler Baptist church for many years. Funeral services for the late John F. Herrell were held from the Ohio Street Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. Fully one hundred of the former neighbors and old friends of Mr. Herrell from Adrian drove down to pay the last tribute of respect. The sermon was preached by Rev. R.M. Webdell and the music for the occasion was furnished by the church choir. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, expressive of the esteem in which Mr. Herrell was held. The pall bearers were three members of Blue Flag lodge Knights of Pythias of this city and three members from the Adrian lodge. At the cemetery the simple and beautiful Pythian burial ceremony was used."
