Richard Alvy Grant was the son of Daniel Grant and Sarah Frances Inman.

He married Pauline Grace Chapman, daughter of Justice Owen Chapman and Virginia ("Jennie") Lee Wells, on April 30, 1911, in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California; the marriage ended between 1930 and 1940. The couple had five children, all daughters, namely:

Hazel Grace (Grant) [Gile] Osborn (March 4, 1912 - May 23, 2003);
Laura Edith (Grant) Jacobs (January 2, 1914 - November 24, 1997, Placer County, California);
Margaret P. (Grant) Hille (October 1, 1915 - June 4, 1997);
Pauline "Blanche" (Grant) [Hitts] Trueblood (October 23, 1916 - May 14, 2002); and
Mariann "Jean" (Grant) [Euer] [Lightel] Leonard (March 8, 1919 - July 20,1974, Reno,
Washoe County, Nevada).

Unless otherwise noted, all five daughters were born and died in Sacramento County, California.

Richard married the widow, Frieda Sophia (Karstens) Cahill, daughter of Jacob Karstens and Anna Jungclaus, on October 11, 1941, in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California; they were married until his death. The couple had no children together.
