Martha Ann Carter was born on July 17, 1825 in Woodford County, Kentucky, the daughter of Josiah Carter (1803-1887) and Nancy Hammond (1807-1841). Her father, Josiah, was also born in Woodford County.

Martha Ann was the first child in a family of nine known children from Josiah's first marriage. Her brothers and sisters included:

Martha Ann Carter married John Howard (1820-) on October 10th, 1843 in Woodford County, Kentucky. John was the son of Vincent Howard (1783-1859) and Fanny Hammond (1787-1844).

John and Martha Ann first lived in Woodford County, Kentucky until they moved to Johnson County, Missouri in the mid 1850's. At about the same time, their parents also moved from Woodford County to Owen County, Kentucky. In the following years, John and Martha Ann, with their seven children, often traveled back to visit their Kentucky relatives. Eventually, four of the children moved back to settle in Kentucky, while three others moved on further west to settle in Kansas and Nebraska.

Martha Ann died on July 17, 1865. It is undetermined if Martha Ann died in Owen County, Kentucky or in Johnson County, Missouri. No grave has been located.
