John W Howard was born in 1820 in Woodford County, Kentucky, the son of Vincent Howard (1783-1859) and Fanny Hammond (1787-ca 1843). His father, Vincent, was originally from Richmond County, Virginia.

John was the third child in a family of seven known children. His brothers and sisters include:
Judia Howard Bailey (1808-1876),
William Howard (1810-1878),
James Howard,
Sallie Oliver Howard Rumsey Elliston (1823-1897),
Ellinor Howard Carter (1826-1878),
Nancy Howard Nance Rumsey (ca 1832-).
All of his siblings were born in Woodford County, Kentucky.

John married Martha Ann Carter (1825-1865) on October 10, 1843 in Woodford County, Kentucky. Martha Ann was the daughter of Josiah Carter (1803-1887) and Nancy Hammond (1807-1842).

John and Martha Ann first lived in Woodford County, Kentucky until they moved to Johnson County, Missouri in the mid 1850's. At about the same time, their parents also moved from Woodford County to Owen County, Kentucky. In the following years, John and Martha Ann, with their seven children, often traveled back to visit their Kentucky relatives. Eventually, four of the children moved back to settle in Kentucky, while three others moved on further west to settle in Kansas and Nebraska.

Martha Ann died on July 17, 1865. Before 1870, John remarried to his second wife, Emma Ramsey, from Kentucky. John died sometime after 1870, probably in Johnson County, Missouri although no grave has been found.
