Richard married Wilma (Fleenor) Atkins on October 16, 1956. He took on the role as dad to Pamela Atkins when she was nine. On April 17, 1958 Sandra K. Greenwalt was born. Both girls were blessed to have such a wonderful father.

Richard enjoyed fishing. He had many trips in his motor home and boat to Willard Bay with his wife. He loved cheering on his favorite football team, the San Francisco 49ers. Richard loved keeping in touch with his many childhood friends from Colorado and his Navy buddies. He was always willing to help anyone in need. Everyone he met was a friend.
