DALE, William Johnson, physician, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, 5 September 1815. His grandfather, William Johnson, fought at Bunker Hill; his paternal grandfather, Ebenezer, at Lexington; and his father, Ebenezer, was a surgeon in the war of 1812. He was graduated at Harvard in 1837, at its medical school in 1840, and began practice in Boston. In June 1861, he was commissioned surgeon-general of Massachusetts, holding the rank of colonel, and in December of that year was appointed acting assistant surgeon of the U. S. army, which place he retained till the close of the war. He was on duty in Boston, Massachusetts, during the civil war, and had general supervision of all matters connected with the medical staff and the care and treatment of the sick and wounded that were sent home. In October 1863, he was raised to the rank of brigadier-general, in connection with his appointment as surgeon-general of Massachusetts. In recognition of his services, the U. S. authorities gave his name to a general hospital established at Worcester, Massachusetts, opened in September 1865. He was a member of the Massachusetts medical society, and was its anniversary chairman.
