Son of Richard Cole, one of the original settlers of Bird Island Cove, he was a lay leader in the Methodist Church. He married Sarah Trask, daughter of Samuel and Ann (Hill) Trask. He died in 1889 and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery at Elliston.
