Ann (Wilson) DeTar, 87, passed away peacefully after having received The Last Rites and Apostolic Blessing on May 23, 2015, surrounded by her loving family while they recited the Holy Rosary and Prayers for the Dying.

Born Nov. 5, 1927, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, John (Jake) H. DeTar. She is survived by her 12 children and their spouses: John W. DeTar and Sharon of San Jose, Calif., Cathy Dillon and Tom of Statesville, N.C., Molly Murphey and Rick of Hauser, Idaho, Josephine DeTar of Watkins Glen, N.Y., Amy Ginski and Steve of Collierville, Tenn., Michael DeTar and Carrie of Liberty Lake, Wash., Patrick DeTar and Angelica of San Jose, Thomas DeTar and Cynthia of Post Falls, Idaho, Francis DeTar and Maureen of Post Falls, Daniel DeTar and Celia of San Jose, Therese Cook and Jared of Sun Valley, Nev., and Edward DeTar and Julie of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She leaves her siblings, ThomasWilson, Patrick Wilson and Jean Wilson of Traverse City, Mich.; 64 grandchildren and 102 great-grandchildren. She is also pre-deceased by two siblings, John Wilson of Lexington, Va., and Josephine Wilson of Livonia, Mich.

Ann was born in Lapeer, Mich., to the late Myron and Helen Wilson. She came from an illustrious family of achievers. In high school she was awarded a scholarship (oboe) to the prestigious Lake Interlochen National Music Summer Camp. She attended University of Michigan on an academic scholarship. Her three brothers were all-American football players at Michigan State with one Rhodes Scholar, John, later President of Washington and Lee University.

Upon obtaining her nursing degree from University of Michigan, she married Dr. John H. DeTar, MD, urologist, and together they raised a large Catholic family of 12 children. Indicative of her generous heart, she opened her home to two Cuban children who lived with the DeTars for two years, fleeing Communist Cuba, 1960-62, through Operation Pedro Pan.

She was the heart of the home, doing "small things with great love." The family dinnertime was a priority for Ann, where she served her homemade bread, pies and savory stews. Ann instilled in her family a love for the Faith, by praying the family rosary and introducing them to the lives of the Saints. She had a special devotion to St. Therese of Lisieux. She also had a tremendous love of reading great works of literature and history (or the latest Tom Clancy novel), and an appreciation of Irish history and its effect on Christendom. Ann demonstrated a talent for knitting Irish sweaters, hats and throws. Spending many summers in Torch Lake, Mich., with her large family was her "Lake Isle of Innisfree," where she enjoyed gardening, sailboat racing (sometimes as crew, mostly as spectator/fan) and birding. Her children remember her for her humble, simple living - devoted to her family and Faith. She was one to have simple needs with simpler wants - using a mere two drawers of a dresser for her entire wardrobe. Ann was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed by all who had the blessing to have known and loved her.

The Holy Rosary will be offered up for the repose of her soul at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Chapel of St. Joan of Arc, 773 N. 11th St., Coeur d'Alene, followed by a 9 a.m. Requiem Mass on Thursday (same location). Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, 17806 E. Trent Ave, Spokane, Wash. Please pray for the repose of her soul.

English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
