Major Burritt, a son of Daniel Burritt, Sr. (a United Empire Loyalist veteran of the American Revolution) and Sarah (Collins) Burritt, married Mary Towsley around 1796. They were the parents of Marcus Burritt, Anson Burritt, Phebe (Burritt) Adams, Johnson Burritt, Lucretia (Burritt) Hurd, Electa (Burritt) Adams, and Clement Burritt. During the War of 1812, he served as an infantry company commander with the rank of lieutenant and acting-captain in the 2nd Regiment of Grenville Militia. Post-war, he advanced to the rank of major and became second-in-command of the regiment.
