Julius Alwin Rompel was born in Tennstedt, Saxony Germany January 14, 1840. He immigrated to the US with his parents Johann and Caroline Herzog Rompel December 31, 1846 through the port of Galveston, TX. The family settled in Comal County, TX in an area that is known today as New Braunfels, Comal County, TX.

Union records show Alwin enlisted with two of his brothers, Charles and twin Edward in 1862, all joining Company A, Texas 1st Calvary unit. Civil War Prisoner Records show (misspelled) Allwin Rompbell private 1st Texas Calv Comp A died from sunstroke June 29, 1863 in New Orleans and was buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery grave 175 letter mark 1167/847.

In the 1920's the US government moved the graves of Union soldiers from Cypress Grove to Chalmette National Cemetery. Transfer records show the name Wm Rompbell. Records searched for last name Rompbell in the US show no one with this last name. Alwin's family was the only Rompel family in Texas. Brothers Charles and Edward made it home to settle into marriage and have children.
