Mary Nina Eason was the 7th of 9 children born to Abraham Darlington Eason II (Abe) and Henrietta Matilda (Henri) Tippins Eason. She married Jasper Floyd Higgs and had two daughters, Charlotte Henri and Mary Floyd Higgs. She was loved greatly by her nieces and nephews who knew her as "Aunt Nina".

The Higgs family made their home in Savannah. The nieces and nephews sometimes visited, with some choosing to live with Uncle Floyd and Aunt Nina for a few months as they moved into the workforce. Although the careers in Savannah were often short-lived (6 months or less, as a general rule), the family ties grew stronger. Opening their home to family from Undine provided opportunities for the Undine youth to expand their personal, social, and academic growth. Uncle Floyd and Aunt Nina watched carefully over their charges while they lived in the Higgs household. The youth never forgot the hospitality and love, endearing them forever to Uncle Floyd, Aunt Nina, Charlotte, and Mary.
