Walter Guild was a merchant who was educated in his native Scotland before came to Virginia with his brother in about 1796. He married Elizabeth Conn in Pittsylvania County on August 29, 1792. They had two sons: James L Guild (1799-1884) and Josephus Conn Guild (1802-1883). After a business failure, The Guilds moved to Tennessee, first to Stewart County, then in 1812 to Sumner County, where they settled on land near the headwaters of Bledsoe's Creek. It was there that, in the Fall of 1813, first Elizabeth, then Walter, contracted a fever from contaminated milk and died, leaving their young sons orphaned, to be raised by their uncle, Joseph H Conn, and two aunts, in Cairo, Tennessee.
