Narcissa Painter, daughter of Mary R. (née Hall) and Joel Elmer Painter, was born in October 1857 in Decatur County, Iowa. She married Joseph Godfrey on 9 January 1876 in Decatur, Decatur County. (Narcissa's brother, Samuel, had married Joseph's sister Angeline in 1874 in Knox County, Illinois.)

The 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses show that Narcissa and Joseph Godfrey had no children of thier own, and that the couple had adopted Grace, born March 1890.
