Harriet 'Hattie' Matthews was the daughter of Calvin Matthews and his first wife Sarah Thompson.
John W. and Harriet 'Hattie' College, having no children of their own, took in Hattie's sisters child, Jessie Beatrice Heath, when she was just a young girl, both of her parents having died. The couple were very good to Jessie and she attended school at Adel, and later they sent her to Drake University in Des Moines. She went on to teach for a time before marrying 15 Sept 1910 William Arthur Mark. At the time of her death Hattie (Matthews) College left the farm in her will for Jessie Beatrice Heath, whom she raised to adulthood as her own.
