Jan. 13, 1923 - Sep. 3, 2015

Kenneth Duane Stone of Sarasota, 92, born January 13, 1923, and died September 3, 2015. He was born in Boone County, Missouri. Duane was a Missouri farm boy during the difficult times of the 'great depression'. He joined the army at age 17 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne. He served 24 years in the Airborne Infantry and retired a Master Sergeant. Duane was a member of the original 501st parachute regiment of the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles). Duane's unit took off late on June 5, and headed for France. Shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944, Duane jumped into Normandy, France, somewhere behind enemy lines at Utah beach. He was one of the fortunate paratroopers on D-day as he landed close to his intended site. Duane was General Taylor's radio man during the war. He had the distinction of being one of four men in the 501st, since its inception (1942), who had not been killed or wounded. Duane saw every major combat action of the 101st Airborne in WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge (Bastogne). Duane was a true American hero and patriot.
He was predeceased by his daughter Patricia Ann Spencer, and his wife, Patricia Case Stone. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Lynn Clarke (Patrick J.) Palm Harbor, Fl, daughter Suzanne Stone, Sarasota, son Thomas D. Stone, Sarasota, son Gerard K. Stone (Shelley J.), Sarasota, son Robert J. Stone, Sarasota, daughter Marcia L. Corbett (Dr. F.
