Augustine “Gus” Abeyta, 92, passed away May 3, 2015, in Monte Vista.
Gus was born on Dec. 10, 1922, in Saguache, Colo., to Onesimo and Julia Abeyta. He married Lena Atencio on Dec. 9, 1942. Gus was an Army veteran of World War II. A vigil service with recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista, Colo. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Canon City, Colo. Interment, with full military honors, will follow at the Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City. Romero Valley Funeral Home of Monte Vista is in care of the arrangements.

Homelake resident Augustine “Gus” Abeyta, 92, passed away May 3, 2015, cradled in Angel’s Wings, at the Homelake Veteran’s Center in Monte Vista. Gus was born on Dec 10, 1922, in Saguache, Colorado, the son of Onesimo and Julia Abeyta. He grew up working alongside his father and attended grade school in Saguache. At the age of 17, he joined the Conservation Corp and earned his high school degree. He was married to Lena Atencio on Dec 9, 1942 in Salida, CO, and together, they raised 7 children.

Gus served his country in the United States Army, where he enlisted on January 20, 1944, and was a veteran of World War II. Basic training was in North Carolina. From there, he was shipped overseas, where he survived the landing on Omaha Beach with his first wounds of the War. An unattached rifle sniper, he made his way across France and Germany, where he fought in the German and Ardennes Campaigns. He suffered major wounds December 25, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge. He was sent home aboard the converted hospital ship, the Queen Mary. He, then, went on to the VA hospital in Brigham City, UT. He spent many years being treated for these wounds that affected his whole life. Gus attained the rank of Sgt. and was awarded 3 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Campaign Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge and European-Africa Middle Eastern Theater Badge, for his service.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he held many local and state offices. Over the years, he worked many jobs from potato, cotton, and hay fields, logging, building roads, and coal mining in Gunnison, Leadville, and Penrose. Gus also was a Head Start Program director and Selective Service Registrar in Cañon City. He retired from the US Air Force Academy purchasing department.

Gus was a loving son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin and friend who enjoyed carpentry, gardening, fishing, hunting, camping, and he cherished the time he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughter Mitzy (Stephen) Abeyta of Monte Vista, CO; son Mark (Debbie) Abeyta of Fountain, CO; sisters Mae (Paul) Lindstrum of Pueblo West, CO; Bonnie Porco of Salida, CO; Sylvia Madrino of Albuquerque, NM; and Sarah Lujan of CA; and brother Bob (Linda) Abeyta of Colorado Springs, CO. Gus is also survived by grandchildren Adam (Cindy), David, Leah, Rob, Chris, Lorena (Miguel), Andrew, Poncho, Nicole, and Tina; great-grandchildren Bethany, Raygen, Elijah, Kylie, Augustine, Eziquel, Amiah, Rheanna, Anthony, Arianna, Sophia, Aubrey, Aaliyah, and Alex, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents Onesimo and Julia Abeyta; wife Lena; daughters Bulah and Beatrice Abeyta; sons Russell, Leroy, and Joseph Abeyta; brothers George, Louie, and Nick Abeyta, and sister Pauline Abeyta.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista, CO. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 10AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cañon City, CO.
