Jane Baldwin Hurt York of Lynchburg, Va. passed away on May 3, 2015 at the age of 97. She was one of twelve children born to Robert Juan and Maude Glass Baldwin of Roanoke, Va. Jane was the wife of the late Earl Kendrick Hurt, Sr. and the late Maj. General John Y. York, Jr., both of Richlands, Va.

Born in Roanoke, Jane attended Roanoke City schools and graduated from Longwood College with a degree in Education. Jane was a beloved wife, mother, teacher, and business owner during the 50 years she lived in Richlands. In 1987, she moved to Lynchburg where she resided until her passing. During her years in Lynchburg, Jane was active in her garden, bridge and art clubs and a member of Peakland United Methodist Church.

Jane is survived by her four children: Earl Kendrick Hurt, Jr. (Jean) of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Martha Hurt Lenehan Dillon (Doug) of Alexandria, Va., Susan Hurt Garner of Lynchburg, Va., Robert Hunter Hurt (Maria) of White Sulphur Springs, WV and nine beloved grandchildren; Michael Hurt (Caroline), Kerry Hurt Stough (Joshua), Jessica, Benjamin and Tyler Garner (Carter), David and Stephen Lenehan, Anne Hunter and Greyson Hurt and five great-granddaughters; Paisley and Quinn Stough, Emmerson and Parker Garner and Elise Hurt, plus many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Jane treasured her family. She was lovingly known as “Gan” to her nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her family enjoyed summer vacations together at Sandbridge Beach, where they savored her homemade cheese straws, Jets and dill oyster crackers, tossed horseshoes, played Scrabble, produced talent shows and watched the sun set as the longest dragon kite on the beach soared above. Holidays always included a perfectly set table, full cookie jar, and abundant laughter. A talented and enthusiastic artist, Jane loved displaying and sharing with her children her many paintings and pieces of pottery. Still life arrangements and the scenic Virginia countryside were a favorite source of inspiration. She found great pleasure in the arts of life (particularly literature, music, cooking, dancing, painting, flower arranging and embroidery) and delighted in their expression. Jane deeply valued a good education, proper etiquette, and her friends, family and devoted nieces and nephews. Her life was filled with wonderful moments and memories that her loved ones will forever cherish.

Pallbearers will be her six grandsons.

The family will receive friends at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2015.
