I once asked my Aunt Olive Spargo what Emma Jane Spargo, my great-grandmother was like. She said that Emma was a very smart woman. Emma's husband, James Spargo, Sr. (my great-grandfather) would give her weekly "play" money that she invested in real estate. Olive said that Emma owed 6 or 7 properties around town.

Emma also taught herself to speak, read and write Gaelic.

Aunt Olive went on to say that Emma was a "suffragette" and once entertained Elizabeth Cady Stanton at 403 N. George.

Emma died in the library at 403 N. George St. There was a bed set up between the two windows. She had diabetes and refused to take her insulin. Olive said that the doctor told her, "There was no reason for her to die." Olive said, Emma was, "tired."

James A. loved to sing and I have heard from several people that he had a very good singing voice. According to Aunt Olive, he especially liked to sing, "My Wild Irish Rose." Olive said that when Emma died, James A. refused to sing the song for one year but sang it again thereafter.
