Sister Mariquita was born to Louis and Zildah (Navarre) Luby on Nov. 9, 1919, in Milwaukee. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1941, and made profession of vows in 1944. Entering the healthcare profession, Sister Mariquita served as a registered nurse and instructor at St. Francis Hospital and School of Nursing, Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare, from 1944 to 1959. She moved to Carroll, Iowa, where she became the director of the Practical School of Nursing at St. Anthony Regional Hospital for 11 years. Sister Mariquita was appointed Director of Retirement at St. Rose Convent in 1970. After four years, she joined the House of Prayer and did part-time nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hillsboro. From 1978 to 1989, Sister Mariquita served as director of special services at a nursing home in Freeport, Ill. She moved to Mobile, Ala., where she ministered as a volunteer with the Catholic Social Center for two years. Next, she called Villa St. Joseph her home and place of ministry where she served as activity director. She moved to St. Rose Convent in 1998. While at St. Rose, Sister Mariquita was the co-manager of the gift shop, until she retired to Villa St. Joseph in 2013.
Sister Mariquita is survived by her Franciscan community; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Paul, John and James; and two sisters, Jeanette and Eleanor (Sister Mary Noel.)
Friends may call after 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at St. Rose Convent, La Crosse. A prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. that evening in Mary of the Angels Chapel. The Rev. Richard Tulko, OFM, will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, in Mary of the Angels Chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.
