Ross S. Leonard, 85, formerly of Spring Grove, died at 4:27 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Fairfax Nursing Center in Virginia. He was the husband of Evelyn R. (Pegan) Leonard, who died May 19, 1972; and of Susan O. Leonard, who died November 26, 2003. Funeral Tuesday, June 13, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, his pastor, Rev. Daniel V. Biles, III, officiating. Laid to rest in Spring Grove Cemetery with a Flag Folding Ceremony by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Born April 23, 1921, in Ironton, Ohio, Ross was a son of the late Hugh A. and Eunice G. (Parsons) Leonard. He retired in 1984 from P.H. Glatfelter Company in Spring Grove, following 38 years of loyal employment as Director of Purchasing. Mr. Leonard was a member of Mill Quarter Century Club. He was also a faithful and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, where he previously served as president of the Church Council. In his younger years, Ross helped to direct many church and community plays, and he enjoyed his involvement with the York Little Theatre. Ross was an extensive traveler and enjoyed his trips to various countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He was an enthusiastic member and fan of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which he was known to attend frequently. He served his country with pride and valor from 1943 to 1946 as a Master Technical Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during WWII. Sgt. Leonard served two tours of duty in the Marshall Island Operation in the South Pacific, where he was a decorated marksman and airborne radar operator. Ross was a 1938 graduate of West York High School and following his military service, returned to graduate from Gettysburg College in 1948. He will be sadly missed by three children, John R. Leonard of York, Sara E. "Sally" Leonard of Vienna, VA, and David H. Leonard of Falls Church, VA; three grandchildren, Kirsten Dalboe, Nicolas Dalboe, and Skyler Leonard; sister Dorothy Johnson of Salisbury, MD; and countless friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott and Joseph Leonard; and two sisters, Edna Dimidowich and Marian Kline. [York Daily Record]
