Harvey M. McFarland, 94, of Pittsburg, died at 1:10 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo.

He was born at Walnut, to James E. and Lillie Marshall McFarland. He attended school in Walnut graduating in 1929.

He served in World War II from 1943 until 1946 at Ft. McClellan, Ala., and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

On August 19, 1931, he married Margie Long in Walnut. She preceded him in death on Oct. 30, 1968. They owned and operated Mac's Cash Grocery until 1937. Then, he operated the DX Service Station for one year and then built his own service station in 1938, which he operated until selling it in 1971. He also worked for the Prest Lumber Company at Erie, from 1972 until 1981.

On January 31, 1970, he married Helen L. Pryor at Pittsburg. They moved to Pittsburg in October 1993. She survives at the family home.

He was the city treasurer of Walnut, retiring after 50 years of service.

He was a member of the Walnut United Methodist Church. After moving to Pittsburg, he became a member of the Countryside Christian Church. He was a member of the Vulcan Lodge AF & AM at Walnut since 1942 and and a 60 year member American Legion since 1946. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Craw-Kan Telephone Coop Association for 28 years.

Additional survivors include a step-son, William G. Pryor of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two step-daughters, Margaret Bailey and Patricia Sweetser, both of Pittsburg; and six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife.
