Ray grew up in Portales and attended the Portales schools. On December 6, 1952, in Big Spring,TX he was married to Pearl Cunningham. In 1956 they moved to Alamogordo where he worked for a time in the Fire Dept, and drove trucks with his dad on road construction jobs. In the early 1960's they moved back to Portales. Ray worked for 17 years on the killing floor at Swift and Co. Meat Packing Co. in Clovis. When the plant closed, he went to work as a journeyman for Newman Electric in Portales. In the mid 1980's they opened Quik Change Oil, and after a couple of years changed the name to Ray's Lube Center. He and Pearl ran the business together until they sold it and retired in the mid1990's.
Ray enjoyed woodworking, and was always in his wood shop building something. One of his many projects was a beautiful acoustic guitar. He would play the guitar and the bass drum and the French harp all at the same time, while he sang. He also enjoyed playing his keyboard while he sang. He and Pearl made regular trips to Las Vegas and to visit their sons.
