Art Lema , a long time Hughson resident, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008 at home with his loved ones by his side.
Art was born in Livingston, CA., attended Livingston schools and graduated from Livingston High School. Art also was the school bus driver during his Junior and Senior year. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He spent his basic training in Alabama. He was then sent to France and Germany where he fought in W.W.11 for two years.
He started a career in construction with his Uncle Joe Lema in the Redding area. About one year later he and his wife Dorothy moved to Hughson. He then began working for Foremost Dairies in 1952 and retired from there 33 years later in 1985.
Soon after retiring, he and his wife purchased a motorhome and began their travels for 18 years. They joined the mo-stan wheelers travel club and took many trips with them. They especially enjoyed staying in Pheonix and Yuma, AZ in the winters.
During his working years in Hughson, he was one of the school bus drivers. He drove many children we all know for 12 years.
Art is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of 61 years, daughter Arlene (Dennis) Prouty of Hughson, son Ron Lema of Hughson and friend Linda Champion of Turlock. He has four grand-children, Craig (Melissa) Prouty, Denise Prouty, of Hughson, Stacey (Kelly) Finch of Modesto, Tony Lema of Stockton and two great- grandchildren, Max and Cole Prouty of Hughson. Also surviving is his brother Raymond Lema of Modesto, sister Lydia Hopkins of Modesto, many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents Manuel and Mary Lema , sister Mary Crouch of Merced, brother Ed Lema of Winton, and oldest son, Anthony (Tony) Lema , KIA Vietman.
Service Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 2:00 PM to be held at Lakewood Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Arthur Leroy Lema , 85, of Hughson. He died Sept. 26, 2008 at his home with loved ones by his side.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Jan. 17, 1923, Mr. Lema was a native of Livingston and attended Livingston schools and graduated from Livingston High School. During his junior and senior years at LHS, Art drove bus. After graduating, he enlisted in the Army and fought in France and Germany during World War II for two years. Mr. Lema started a career in construction with uncle Joe Lema in the Redding area. About one year later he and his wife Dorothy moved to Hughson where he worked for Foremost Dairies in 1952. He retired from there 33 years later in 1985. As a retiree he and his wife traveled in their motorhome for 18 years. They joined the Mo-Stan wheelers travel club and took many trips with them. They especially enjoyed staying in Phoenix and Yuma in the winters.

The longtime Hughson resident also was a part-time school bus driver for12 years.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy Lema of Hughson; his children, Arlene Prouty and Ron Lema , both of Hughson; his brother, Raymond Lema of Modesto; his sister, Lydia Hopkins of Modesto; four grandchildren, Craig Prouty and Denise Prouty, both of Hughson, Stacey Finch of Modesto, and Tony Lema of Stockton; and two great-grandchildren, Max Propty and Cole Prouty, both of Hughson. He was preceded in death by parents Manuel and Mary Lema , sister Mary Crouch, brother Ed Lema , and his oldest son, Anthony Lema who was killed in the Vietnam War.
