Roach, 17th Co., 20th Engineers, sailed to World War I aboard the troopship "Tuscania" which was torpedoed and sunk on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland. There were 215 soldier casualties. Frederick returned from war in May 1919 aboard "Roanoke." On both voyages, he listed his mother, Mrs. Minnie S. Roach of Rock, Michigan, as his next-of-kin.
