On 24 January 1918, Pvt. Frederick S. Roach, 17th Co., 20th Engineers, sailed to World War I aboard the troopship "Tuscania" which was torpedoed and sunk on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland. There were 215 soldier casualties. Frederick returned from war in May 1919 aboard "Roanoke." On both voyages, he listed his mother, Mrs. Minnie S. Roach of Rock, Michigan, as his next-of-kin.
In the 1900 census, Fred Gauthier (8, born Michigan) and his sister Sylvia Gauthier (5, born Wisconsin) live in Keyser, DeKalb County, Illinois, with their stepfather John Roach, mother Minnie Roach & (apparently) John's daughter, May Roach, age 10. John and Minnie report having been married three years. However, a 22 June 1914 marriage record in Calumet, Houghton, Michigan, lists the marriage of Mrs. Agnes M. Sanville Gauthier to John H. Roach.

In the 1920 census for Minneapolis, Hennepin County,, Minnesota, Frederick S. Roach, age 17, born Michigan, lives with mother Minnie Roach, sister Silvia Roach & a boarder named John Webber (23 Germany) who will later marry his mother Minnie.

In 1930, John "Webber" and wife Minnie live with John's stepson Fred Roach in York, Du Page County, Illinois. In 1940, the three live in Richland, Newton County, Arkansas. Fred lists himself as divorced.
In 1950, the three live in Houston, Harris County, Texas.
