John H. YOUNG, had been a member of the early church since about 1840 and was ordained an elder at Nauvoo. He was born May 11, 1811, in what then was known as Jackson County (now Putman.) He was the son of David and Elizabeth (Vance) Young, who came from Germany, making their first home in Virginia about 1750.
After the death of the Prophet, John went to Texas with Lyman Wight. In 1855, he left the Wight colony and moved into Indian Territory where he remained until 1860 when he came to Gallands's Grove. Although he did not join the Reorganization until 1884, he was always a firm believer in the gospel as revealed and taught by Joseph Smith, and so taught his family. He was highly respected as an honest and upright citizen of the Community. He ruled his home strictly, yet in a manner to command the respect of all. He died in Galland's Grove, October 30, 1866, survived by his wife and eleven Children.
