Oscar was the son of George A. Gurthet and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Spencer, who married on 19 Aug 1880. According to Lizzie on the 1910 Census, the couple had six children together—Oscar (10 Jul 1881), Emory (29 May 1883), Alonzo "Lon" Earl (26 Mar 1888), Ida (1893), Gladys W. (May 1897), and Marjorie M. (14 Nov 1904).

Because the 1890 Census is no longer around, it wouldn't be until the 1900 Census that the family appeared on a U.S. census. They were living in Center Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. George Gurthet, aged 42, was earning a living as a farmer. Lizzie, aged 40, reported that she had had five children, and that all five had survived to that census. There with their parents were Oscar, aged 18, Emory, aged 17, Alonzo, aged 12, Ida, aged 6, and Gladys, aged 3. Marjorie would join the family four years down the road.

A year after that census, the unthinkable happened when the family lost son and brother Emory on 14 May 1901, sixteen days shy of his eighteenth birthday, victim of a severe bout with the flu.

Perhaps the marriage of son Oscar two months later on 14 Jul 1901 to Jennie Elizabeth Flora would bring a measure of joy to the family. Jennie was the daughter of John James Flora and Margaret Ellen Cormican. Oscar and Jennie tied the knot in Marshall County. Seven months later, the couple welcomed son Clair LoWayne on 11 Feb 1902.

Oscar and Jennie appeared together on the 1910 Census, living in Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana, where Oscar was employed as an agent for a medical company. Jennie reported that she had had one child and that it was still living. Oddly, 8-year-old Clair did not appear on that record with Oscar and Jennie. He appeared instead on a separate record, living in Kokomo with Robert and Louise Davies and their children Bertha, Fred and Walter and he was identified as their son. As Louise's maiden name was Newman, it is not clear how Clair was related to Robert and Louise, if he was even related to them at all.

That 1910 enumeration took place on 15 Apr 1910. Jennie died five months later on 14 Sep 1910, a victim of diptheria.

Oscar eventually remarried on 18 Apr 1914, exchanging vows with Matilda "Tillie" Dorothy Schoner in Marshall County. Tillie was the daughter of Peter Joseph Schoner and Frederika Miller. For some reason, Tillie's parents were given as Fred J. Schoner and Mary C. Hillsman who were actually her older brother and sister-in-law.

Tillie took step-son Clair under her wing, and she and Oscar had three children of their own—Dorothy M. (3 Nov 1914), Robert Elsworth (26 Aug 1917), and Eugene Monroe (28 Mar 1926).

The years 1916 and 1917 would have been sad ones for Tillie as she lost first her mother Frederica, and then her father Peter.

Oscar's 1917 WWI registration, he indicated that he was living in rural Argos, Marshall Co., married (to Tillie), farming, and that he was short, of medium build, that he had blue eyes and light hair.

Tillie and Oscar appeared together on the 1920 Census, living in Center Township, Plymouth, where Oscar was indeed farming. With the couple were Clair, aged 17, Oscar's son with first-wife Jennie, and Tillie and Oscar's two children Dorothy, aged 6, and Robert. Aged 2 years, 5 months. Also living with the family was 37-year-old hired man Charles Davis.

On 28 Nov 1928, Oscar's son Clair married Ruby H. Thomas (1905-2000), the daughter of Charles and Grace Thomas.

When the 1930 enumeration took place, Oscar and Tillie were still living in Center Township. Oscar, aged 48, was busy with the farm. Tillie, aged 40, would have had her hands busy at home with their three children--Dorothy, aged 15, Robert, aged 12 and Eugene, aged 4.

Two years after that census, Oscar's father George Gurthet passed, aged 74.

Five years after losing his father, Oscar lost wife Tillie on 23 Jun 1937 at age 47, victim of a stroke. Oscar had her laid to rest alongside her parents and brother Jesse.

City directories for the city of South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana (located about 18 miles north of Plymouth), show Oscar living at 609 S. 29th St. in 1937 with children Dorothy and Robert. In 1938, it listed them at 804 S. 26th St.

In 1940, Oscar appeared on that year's census, living back in Center Twp., Plymouth, with son Clair, Clair's wife Ruby, and their three children Rodger (b.1930), Betty (b.1932), and Harry (b.1939). Oscar, aged 59, indicated he was still doing farm labor.

A year after that census, Oscar suffered a basilar skull fracture on 1 May 1941 while working on the farm, and died soon after being taken to the hospital in South Bend. A basilar skull fracture is a fracture of the base of the skull, a rare type of fracture, occurring in just 4% of severe head injury patients. The children had him laid to rest next to first-wife Jennie here in Oak Hill.

Oscar and Tillie's daughter Dorothy does not appear to have married. Son Robert married Bette J. (couldn't find a record), and son Eugene married Mary Jane Browdues on 2 Sep 1951 in Bartholomew, Marshall Co., Indiana.
