Abraham Houghtaling was twenty three years old when the American Revolution erupted. Although the sympathies of his brothers and his father were with the Loyalists, he may have been on the side of the Rebellion, as a Revolutionary War marker was placed on his grave in Riverside Cemetery, Oneonta, Otsego, New York, in 1914 (DAR Gen. Form Series 5, 22:1923; DAR Grave Rec. 9:254; A. H. Sage ms.). He was later a member of the state militia (Council of Appointment, Military Rec. 1:352, in which Abraham Houghtaling is called "Ensign of a new company in town of Kortright, south side of Charlotte River" [1796]).
His wife, Catherine Prys/ Price, is buried close by, having died "II November 1842 ae 88 years." Their marriage took place prior to 1777, in which year they witnessed the baptism of his sister's child, Abraham, in Claverack Church.
