Vel was still in high school when she met George, a German immigrant, working at the nearby creamery in Hills, Minnesota. When George decided to give up his job in order to return to Germany for a year to visit his family, Vel thought she was going to lose him. George promised her he would return, but he missed his family very much, so she feared that when he got home, he would want to stay. They bet each other seven pennies at the time of his departure. He bet her seven Indian head pennies that he would return and they would marry. She bet him seven Lincoln head pennies that he would stay with his family. George did return and won the seven Indian head pennies, which became a lifelong reminder of their love for one another.
