Adelaide was born in Hoven, Potter County, South Dakota, to Hollen Samuel Thompson (Memorial ID 255647244) and Florence A. Shue (Memorial ID 255323766). She was taken in and then adopted by Francis "Frank" and Adelaide (Terry) Lewis after Florence died in 1912 while the Thompson family was in Florence, Italy, where Hollen was studying voice culture/opera. Hollen S. Thompson and Adelaide (Terry) Lewis were maternal first cousins.
