Rubert was born and raised in Barnwell, SC. He served in the United States Air Force, was a veteran of the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1954. After working briefly at the Savannah River Plant, he accepted the call to the ministry, being ordained at his home church of Barnwell First Baptist. He attended the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, FL, and William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS, where he earned a BA degree. His post-graduate studies were at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He served numerous churches in the Southern Baptist Convention, both in Mississippi and South Carolina.
He met his wife Myrtha Ellen Horton while both were serving in the Air Force. They were married in West Palm Beach, FL in 1953. This union produced three children.
Surviving are Rubert and Ellen's three children, one brother, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
