La Verna was born the youngest of 13 children to Henry and Mary Ann Melcher in Lindsay, Neb. and graduated from Lindsay's Catholic High School in 1941. She graduated from St. Catherine's Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha in 1944 with a Registered Nurse (RN) degree. She married her high school sweetheart, Mark T. Maguire, when he returned home from WWII in 1945. They initially lived in Southern California where she worked as an RN for a short time before they returned to the Midwest.

Vernee and Mark lived a full and joyous life and celebrated 65 years of marriage before Mark passed away in 2010. They owned the Dutch Mill in Council Bluffs before moving to an acreage on Hwy. 92, where they operated Maguire Oil Co. for 40 years. The business included a gas station, service garage and appliance store. LaVerna was active in the business and served as its bookkeeper, in addition to raising their six children. She and Mark also enjoyed extensive travel together. She was a devoted Catholic and her faith in God was her focus and strength.

Vernee is predeceased by her husband; daughter, Mary Lee Wahle-Yost; her parents; and her 12 brothers and sisters.
