As a slave, Mary Elisabeth Woodfork was sent to accompany her owner's son, Lucian, to West Virginia to look after him during his exile from Virginia, following a scandalous shooting incident. Lucian got into more trouble in West Virginia, however, and absconded north with Mary, where they married. The couple settled in Ontario, Canada where they had four children. Lucian later abandoned Mary and their children to return to Virginia, where he fought in the Civil War on behalf of the Confederacy and never returned to his family in Canada.
