Virginia Wise Byrd Magness was born in 1821 in Batesville, Arkansa. She was the daughter of John Byrd of Virginia and Mary Weiss Byrd of Missouri. The Weiss family owned a salt mine, had boats on the Mississippi and White river, and had a donation land claim where the city of St. Louis now stands. Her father disappeared after the Civil War.

Virginia Wise Byrd Magness Married John Redmond Magness on February 14th 1841. After wedding her husband their life had many interesting twist. John enlisted in the Mexican War and was missing in action, but later returned home by the United states Army. In addition John and Virginia, and many other family members traveled the Oregon trail from Arkansa to Oregon where the suffered many rough and lawless pioneer times. Virginia was a devoted and hardworking mother to care for all those people and drive them across America. She had a vision and inspiration for her family.

The Magnes family was blessed with five children as follows:
Andrew Porter Magness, Josephine Magness, David A. Magness, Perry Green Magness, and Robert N. Magness.

Unfortunately, the Magness families only daughter, Josephine, was struck in the head buy a falling tree, being logged not far from the campsite they were staying in. The logger returned the child to her mother, but Josephine, four years old, died shortly after in her mothers arms.

In Springfield, while pregnant with their sixth child, Virginia fell ill and miscaried the baby and soon died there after of "Childbirth fever". She was buried at the Fairfiled Cemetery in Marion county in Gervais, Oregon. Virginia died in 1859. Her surviving four children were distributed among other family members and raised.

Virginia will be honored and memories of her cherished for always.
