John Redmond Magness was born on April 12th, 1822 in Indepence, Arkansa to Perry Green and Virginia Wise Byrd Magness. The Paternal Grandparents are Jonathon and Patsy U. Magness and the maternal Grandparents are Andrew and Martha (Buchanan) Steel.

John grew up in a pioneer environment with opportunity looming everywhere and the reality of intense physical labor for survival. The pioneer man knew terror and despair. Although these encounters were plentiful, John found joy in daily life and family.

He was well educated and able to read and write, therefore he was educated in the bible. At age 22, John was married to Virginia Weiss Byrd (b. 1821 Batesville, AR and d. 1859 in Springfield, Lane, Oregon), on February 14th, 1844. She was the daughter of John Byrd of Virginia and Mary Weiss Byrd of Missouri. A daughter of a wealthy and prominent family.

John Magness enlisted for the Mexican War on July 23rd, 1846, at Washington, Arkansa, for a length of one year.
Records show that he was "absent, captured by the enemy at Incarnacion, Mexico, January, 23rd, 1847. The imprisoned soldiers were return to there American commander's and John Magness was returned home. Magness family memoir's reflect much on his experience's in the war and his fondess for his leader, Andrew Porter, to who he namesaked his firstborn son, Andrew Porter Magness.

Mr. and Mrs. Magness had five children: Andrew Porter Magness born January 3rd, 1847, Perry Magness born 1849, Daughter Josephine born in 1851, David A. Magness
born in 1853, and and Robert N. Magness born December 15th, 1855.

The family plan to travel the Oregon trail and herd there cattle along the way. Mrs. Magness Died after a miscarriage of "child fever". Virginia was buried at the Pioneer cemetery near Eugene, Oregon. At age four, their only daughter, Josephine was also killed after being struck by a falling tree being cut by a nearby logger.

Mr. Magness was one of the pioneer families of Yamhill County and arrived in 1854. The town was built buy the pioneer's. all fortune seeker's that had crossed the treturous plains. John was pretty sucessfull in farming until about 1864. Mr. Magness sent the remaining children to live with other relatives and he struggled to survive with the farm and there properties. He worked as a farmer and miner. John went on many mining prospects in Eastern Oregon and for three years he experienced many people and situations. Eventually he was forced to sell off land as the town of Springfield was developing in Oregon.

In 1859, John Redmond Magness married Mary Savage York (b. 1831-1919). To this new family three children were born: Elizabeth, Morgan, and James Magness. Times stayed rough and lawless for the pioneers and for this new family as John struggled to provide for his family in desperate times.

Later in life, John was able to make trip's home to Arkansa. After John's last trip home, he fell ill. His son, Robert N. Magness took his father and care for him until his death. Mr. Magness died on July 29th, 1893 in Fairfield, Marion, Oregon. He was survived be his spouse and seven children and several grandchildren.

John Redmond Magness lived a life full of adventure and hardships. He should be praised and remembered for his will to survive and his capability. We will honor his name and prayer for his eternal rest. May he know the love and compassion of the Lord's kindom. May he be reunited with his beloved wife, Virginia, and daughter, Josephine.
