Alvin Lee Vernon 71, of Lubbock died Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Covenant Medical Center. He was born March 18, 1941 to Benjamin Bert and Essie Mae Eiland Vernon in Lockney, TX. He was raised in Lockney and graduated from Lockney High School. After graduation he became a peace officer, working for the Hale County Sheriff’s Office and the Plainview Police Department. He married Lillie Maxine Julian August 12, 1962 in Plainview, TX. They made their home there and in 1973 they moved to Lubbock, TX. At that time, he went to work for the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office and he worked for a time for Crosby County. In 1977, he took a break from law enforcement and worked for himself as an auto mechanic. In 1985 he returned to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office and worked there until he retired in 1999. Since that time, he has worked as a private detective, served civil papers for the Lubbock SO and worked for credit unions doing repossessions of motor vehicles.
Alvin is preceded in death by his Mother and Father; two brothers; Bert Vernon, Jr. and Don Vernon and two sisters; Betty Cruse and Nina White.
He was a member of the Southcrest Baptist Church and the Blue Knights Motor Cycle Club, made up of peace officers.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 52 years; Maxine Vernon. Two sons Steven Vernon of Lubbock and Danny Vernon and wife, Tanya, of Post, TX. Two brothers: Royce Vernon and wife, Irma of Round Rock, TX and Jerry Vernon and wife, Kathy of Troupe, TX. One sister; Norma Chalupa and husband, Frank of Fort Worth, TX. Sister-in-law: Ethlyn Vernon Garnett and husband, Joe of Lockney. Three grandchildren: Colt Bland Vernon and wife Natatlie, Kadie Lynn Vernon Tanner and husband Matthew and Alexus Riley Vernon. One great-granddaughter: Emma Sue Tanner.
