Son of Irel Lynn Chase and Louise Barton

Obituary. Irel "Lynn" Chase Jr. born July 11, 1932, passed away on April 15, 2014, at the age of 81.

Lynn was born in Nephi Utah to Irel and Louise Barton Chase and grew up on a dry farm between Levan and Nephi Utah. In the summers he would live on the farm and during the school months, he lived with his Grandma Chase in Nephi to attend school. He married his High School sweetheart Kathryn Carter on June 20 1952 while attending his first year of college.

Soon after attending college, he was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean conflict. He and Kathryn moved from Utah to California to El Paso TX and to Maine while serving in the Army. While in Maine (1955) their first child Kathy was born. Soon thereafter he received his military release and went back to Utah to continue his education. However, he chose to follow the prompting to serve an LDS mission even though Kathryn was expecting their second child. He received permission to go even though the practice of sending married men on LDS missions had stopped earlier that year. He was perhaps the last married (singling serving) man called on a 2-year proselyting mission for the LDS Church. He served in the Central States Mission from 1956 to 1958. He returned home to see his daughter Donna for the first time. Upon returning home, he went back to school in Logan Utah and he and Kathryn had twin boys, James and John, followed 20 months later with their fifth child Jeff.

He graduated in 1962 with an Electrical Engineering degree from Utah State University and got his first job working for Hewlett Packard in Northern California. During his short stay in California, their daughter Margaret was born. He soon thereafter was transferred to the Hewlett Packard division in Colorado Springs CO, where he lived until 1970. During that time his daughter Ann was born to them. He loved raising his little family and enjoyed playing competitive softball, which his young boys would often go watch him do.

In 1970 he moved his family to Utah where he and Kathryn had two more children, Emily first followed by Phillip three years later. He worked for Summit International, Communication Certification Lab, HP, Eaton Kenway and EG&G during his professional career in Utah. He and his family lived in both the Holladay area and in South Jordan in the Salt Lake Valley.

After retirement Lynn served in the LDS South Jordan Temple baptistery for seven years.

He and Kathryn then served an LDS mission together in the Independence Missouri Mission from 2001 to 2003. They dearly loved working with the people in the town of Hiawatha Kansas, in which they served their entire mission.

In his later life, Lynn began to write fictional books of which he completed three. He enjoyed keeping a garden, which he had done his whole life, and working in his yard along with writing books and family history.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn Carter Chase; all his children (Kathy Lynne Bates (Lonnie), Donna Louise Varley (Brent), James Lynn (Susan), John Lee (Melodie), Jeffery Laine (Jodi), Margaret Lisa Riess (Lavar), Ann Lorraine Rawlings (Mark), Emily Lucinda McKinnon (Clayton), Phillip Lance (Alisa); 32 grandchildren and 36 great children; sisters Mary Lou Olson, Laura Norris; brother Randall Chase (Debbie); and sister-in-law Rose Mary. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Barton, as well as many extended family members.

The funeral will be held at 10:00 AM at the LDS chapel located at 11251 South 2700 West South Jordan.

A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday and at 9:00 AM and Saturday at the stated church house location.

Burial services will be held at the Santaquin cemetery.
