While no given name is listed, almost certainly this is a record of the death and burial of Charles Neely, born about 1859-60 in Arkansas. In June of 1880, Charles Neely was listed as a 21-year-old laborer living in the household of Jonas Miller in Old Moro (1880 U.S. Census, Arkansas, Lee Co., Hampton Twp., E.D. 168, dwelling 73). Charles said that his father was born in Alabama and his mother in Illinois. Charles is not found before or after 1880, but several families with the Neely or Neeley surname had settled in or near Hampton Township as early as 1850, and some continue to live there today.

In 1880, living in dwelling 75 just two doors away from where Charles Neely was living, was the family of Samuel Ridge and Samuel's first wife Maria Neely Ridge. They were the grandparents of Emily Janice Ridge, in whose personal files this record of the 1885 death and burial of a member of the Neely family was discovered. It is likely that this unnamed member of the Neely family was related to Emily's grandmother Maria Neely Ridge, and thereby to Emily herself, even though he or she died some 45 years before Emily was born.
