BAXTER SPRINGS, KANSAS: Harold E Getman, Age 89, passed away at 5:25 pm, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at Wildwood Community, Joplin, MO following an illness.
Harold was born July 1, 1925 in Cherokee County, KS.
His parents were Emil and Margaret (Taylor) Getman.
He had lived in Baxter Springs for the past 68 years.
He began working at age 15 in Amarillo, TX. He returned to Kansas to work at the Parsons Ammunitions Plant before he got a job on the Frisco Railroad. His last job as a young man was working in the area mines. He began working for Empire District Electric Company in 1946 as a lineman. He continued with Empire for 43 years until his retirement.
He attended Fellowship Baptist Church, Baxter Springs, KS.
Harold was married to Sonoma Faye Owens on April 1, 1945. She passed away March 2, 1995.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Harold “Doogie” Getman Jr, and Kim Douglas Getman, one granddaughter, Skyla; one sister Lois Young and two brothers, Leo Getman and Clyde Getman.
Surviving is one daughter, Cheryl D Burton (husband, Carl) Baxter Springs, KS; one brother, Lawrence Getman (wife, Vesta) Independence, MO; one sister, Margie Croft, Indianapolis, IN; 4 grandchildren, Greg, Dana, Jamie, and Jen; and 5 great-grandchildren, Kayla, Madison, Kain, Alex, Karissa.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Monday, March 16, 2015 at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs, KS. Jim Bowles will officiate.
Burial will be in Baxter Cemetery, Baxter Springs, KS.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday March 15, 2015 at the funeral home.
