He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 in the Western Pacific and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty, he worked at the former Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company in Franklin, The Talon and General Manifold for 36 years until its closing; and had worked for Burns Security for one more year, until his retirement.
He married Barbara Beers on Dec. 24, 1941.
They had six children, who survive: Sandy and husband Bob Peterson, Kate and husband Roger Duck, Terry Lee and husband Ronald Weyand and Melvin Porter, all of Franklin, Mike and wife Diane Porter of Rocky Grove and Dorothy Guthrie of Cranberry; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, six great-step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Donna Beers of Rockland and Faye Peterson of Franklin; many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a great grandson: Johnathon Taylor; his sisters: Dorothy, Maude and Evelyn; and a nephew: Chuck Dunlap.
Private graveside services in Graham Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the members of the V.E.T.S. Funeral Honor Guard of Franklin will be scheduled at the convenience of his family.
