James Allen Cotten Jr was born on April 28, 1822, the son of Allen Cotten Sr (1781–1868) and his wife Mary "Polly" (Barham) Cotten (1798–1863). [NOTE: Allen Jr's parents were married on December 9, 1815 in Davidson County, Tennessee.]
He was married on January 9, 1856 in Williamson County, Tennessee to Catherine Elizabeth Tucker (1834-1881), the daughter of James Harvey Tucker (1805–1887) and Mary (Lazenby) Tucker (1812–1848).
Allen passed away on March 26, 1894 in Davidson County, Tennessee and was buried in the small family burial ground.
