T. A. Riggin Dies

T. Albert Riggin, a retired grocer of Collinsville and step-brother of John Collins of Troy, died at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, September 3rd, at the age of 75. Death occurred at the Veterans Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, where he was taken last Saturday for the fifth time in the past 15 years. He had been in poor health since 1937.

He was born at Jarvis Township near Troy, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Riggin. He moved to Collinsville in 1900 to enter a grocery partnership with his brother Henry. From 1905 to 1941 he operated the grocery business himself. He retired at that time because of poor health. His father had died when he was a young boy and he worked on the farm from the age of seven to 21, when he entered the U.S. Cavalry with Troop D and served in the Spanish-American War. He was the only man from Troy in that war.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Phosa Bowker Riggin, to whom he was married in 1904; a daughter, Mrs. Lew (Alberta) Lazier; two brothers, John Riggin of San Jose, California, and Henry Riggin, Salinas, California; a step-brother, John Collins, Troy; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Collinsville with the Rev. William Sill officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. The Masonic Lodge participated in the funeral services.

Mr. Riggin was a member of Masonic Lodge 712, A.F. and A.M., Royal Arch Masons No. 182, and the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a charter member of Masonic Council 101. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Nelson A. Miles Camp, United States Spanish War Veteran, East St Louis.

The wedding was a quiet affair and was witnessed only by the relatives of the parities. The couple left for a wedding trip to Iowa, and will return to Collinsville to reside.
