She was born on October 1, 1926, in Rockbridge, Mo., daughter of Melinda and Charles Leek, and lived in Missouri until May of 2011, when she moved to California so that her granddaughter could look after her.
Lola was a beauty operator for 42 years, starting her career by getting her license at Casters Beauty Academy in St. Joseph. She ran her own shop on King Hill Ave. called Vanity Fair Beauty Shop.
In 1960, she married Herman Steiner, and ran a salon in the same building as his business, the St. Joe Glass, until they both retired. She formerly retired on July 1, 1988. They then bought a motor home and traveled thoughout the United States and Mexico. They also took up flying and both got their pilots license. During her retirement she had many hobbies, crocheting, knitting, and sewing; she also enjoyed painting, and upholstery.
Her house had many originals painted on the walls and kitchen cabinets. She had a little shed that she spent hours re-upholstering old furniture into beautiful new pieces to be cherished.
Lola was known for always having a pet or two or three. Cats, dogs, and birds, all of which were mostly strays, would always have a home as far as she was concerned.
Lola was preceded in death by husbands, Merle Smith, Bill Starr, and Herman Leo Steiner; her parents; son, Steve Smith; stepdaughter, Jan Christenson; and two brothers, Logan and Wayne Leek.
