James Aiton, one of the first pioneers in Douglas county passed away Saturday morning at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. Death was due to uremic poisoning. He had been enjoying good health until the two weeks previous when he became ill.
Mr. Aiton was born in Ogdensborg, N.Y. on February 23, 1852, the son of the late John and Nancy Coleman Aiton. He came to Minnesota with is parents 83 years ago when the family settled in St. Paul, then a mere village. His father was engaged in the building and contracting business until 1869 when he homesteaded near Lake Reno in Pope county. The father and boys, in addition to farming did building and contracting work in Glenwood and vicinity. They erected the first brick school house in Alexandria and Glenwood. Mr. Aiton put in the ornamental plaster in the Farmers National Bank and also in the local post office.
On September 13, 1883, he was united in marriage to Grace Hine in Alexandria at the home of her father, H. T. Hine on Lake Henry. Mrs. Aiton passed away February 1926.
Surviving Mr. Aiton are five daughters: Ms. Beth Smith of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Ora Nichols of Alexandria, Miss Ava Aiton of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Gladys Rosenburg and Lois Aiton of Boseman, Mont. One daughter Claire passed away in 1893 at the age of eight years and one son Teddy at the age of two years. There are four grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at the Closson mortuary and the ashes were shipped here and funeral services will be held the latter part of this week at the Anderson funeral chapel.
