Mrs. Sarah McCollum

Another Mother in Israel Gone.

Mrs. Sarah McCollum dies last Sunday night at the the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Isiah Forney, in Wheeling Township, and was buried on Christmas day in the Bird's Run churchyard. She was born in the state of New Jersey, in the month of February, 1807, and was therefore nearing the end of her 77th year. The home of her old age was with her son, Richard, on the home place, in Wheeling Township until his death there some four years ago, and since that time she has resided alternately with her son, James M. McCollum, and her daughters, Mrs. Jane Mardis and Mrs. Hannah Forney, of the same vicinity. In addition to those named above she was the mother of Ezekiel McCollum, of Cambridge, Mrs. Dennison Tetrick, of Madison Township, Rev. Paul McCollum, Charles McCollum and Isaac McCollum, of Missouri, and Mrs. Sophia Osborn, of Iowa. Mrs. McCollum came with her father, Ezekiel McPeek, to the then wilderness, where Madison Township is now located, and near the present site of the village of Antrim. She was married to Jasper McCollum about 1825, and resided in the same vicinity until about 1859, when she removed with her children to Wheeling Township, her husband having died several years prior to that time. She early became a member of the Baptist church, and lived to see all of her large family brought into the household of faith where she spent a long and useful life and was loved and honored mother. Her funeral was conducted by the Rev. Thomas S. Luccock, in the absence of her pastor, who was detained by the floods. It had been understood for several years the deceased and the Rev. J.G. Whitaker, that he was to preach her funeral, as he had been a boarder at her home when a student at Madison College, a life long friend and had preached the funeral of her husband. Now nearly thirty years ago. Rev. Whitaker will therefore conduct a service in honor of Mother McCollum, at the Bird's Run Baptist Church next Sabbath at 11 o'clock a.m. , and deliver a memorial address. Many friends were unable to attend the funeral on account of the swollen streams, and Ezekiel McCollum was unable to return until Wednesday night when he walked all the way back across the country otherwise a notice of the occurrence would have appeared earlier in our volume.
