Chester R. "Ches" Welshans 86, of Avella passed away on Tuesday-March 16, 2010 peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 8, 1923 in Colliers, West Virginia the son of Charles O. and Elsie Brown Welshans Sr.

Mr. Welshans was Catholic by faith. He was a member of the Avella American Legion Post #643, loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and going to auctions and sales. Mr. Welshans attended the Civilian Conservation Corp at age 16, and was also employed at Colliers Steel Sheet and Metal in Follansbee, West Virginia. He served in the United States Army during WW II with the 826th. Army Engineers Aviation Battalion, fighting in France, Germany, Normandy, England, Luxemburg and Paris receiving the following Decorations and Citations; The Good Conduct Medal, The American Theater Service Ribbon, The European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Six months after being discharged from the United States Army at the age of 22 Mr. Welshans became employed at Weirton Steel as the assistant roller of the Tandem Mill retiring after 38 years of employment.

In 1946 Mr. Welshans married Angeline Oliver who died in 1951. On July 25, 1953 he married Matilda Vicheck whom he was married to for 46 years until her death in March of 1999.

Surviving are his children; Barbara (Robert) Cupper of Belle Vernon, Elsie (George) Prevuznik of Washington, Debbie Vaden of Avella, and Jack Welshans of Avella, one brother; Fred Welshans of Colliers, West Virginia, three sisters; Judy (Carl) Nice of Follansbee, West Virginia, Patricia McGaughey of Weirton, West Virginia, and Virginia Cantor of Follansbee, West Virginia, ten grandchildren; Matthew Prevuznik, Christine (Kevin) Dry, Jennifer Cupper, Nicholas Cupper, Michelle Lemasters (David) Knight, Damian Lemasters, Chad (Meredith) Lemasters, Haven Vaden, Levi Welshans, and Joshua Welshans, eight great grandchildren; Austin, Mason, Ryan Adelle, Madi Rose, Shelby, Alexus, Isaac and Devin, along with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Welshans was preceded in death by three brothers; Jack, William, and Charles "Tom" Welshans, four sisters; Betty Welshans, Catherine George, Ida Mae Wargo and Wanda Vasquez.

Friends will be received on Friday-March 19, 2010 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc. Wilson at East Katherine Avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A prayer service will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday-March 20, 2010 in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. in St. Michaels Church, 97 Highland Avenue, Avella Pa. with Fr. Pierre Sodini as celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Michaels Church Cemetery, Avella. Full military rites will be accorded by the Avella American Legion Post # 643.
