Our hearts are sad as we report the death of John Franklin Hammons on February 26, 2015. John was the son of James W. and Myrtle Finney Hammons, born on April 13, 1930 in Strong City, Okla.
Death occurred in McAlester.
Two daughters and one son survive him: Grace White of Clarksville, Tenn., Susan Newton of Sugar Hill, Ga., and John Russell Hammons of Duluth, Georgia. Two sisters survive him: Marylee Padgett of Medford, Ore., and Pauline Johnsey of Memphis.
He leaves behind nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A son, Ronald Hammons and a great granddaughter, Jaiden preceded him in death, as well as one brother: Samuel William Hammons and five sisters: Irene Anthony, Frances Spruill, Gladys Gilreath, Nell Thompson, and Floye Wiginton.John was "true grit", with a soft side of tremendous love for his family. He never turned down anyone when they really needed help. He said" I'll be there as soon as I can".
We leaned on him. We will so much miss those phone calls that always ended with "Kid, I love you".
