Tris Speaker Scott, 97, of Hubbard, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015, in Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015, in Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard.

Tris was born in Hubbard, Texas, to the late James Gray Scott and Pearl (Speaker) Scott. She was a 1936 graduate of Hubbard High School, graduated from Texas Women’s College in 1940 and later received a Master’s Degree from Baylor University. Tris was an elementary school teacher for over 40 years, having taught in Sonora, Hubbard, and Lawrenceville, Illinois, where she also was a principal.

She was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Hubbard Garden Club, Hubbard Community Affairs Association, Hubbard Rodeo Association, Tris Speaker Youth Club and Hill County Family Abuse Center. Tris was responsible for the creation of the Children’s Library located in the historic Hubbard High School. She was also inducted into the Hubbard Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame.

Tris was preceded in death by siblings: Virginia Scott Linder, James Wilburn Scott, Gypsy Scott Riddle and Margaret Scott Swan.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Scott Riddle and wife, Pat, of Hubbard, Elizabeth Swan Snively, of Huntington, Indiana, Leslie Stevenson and husband, Tom, of Easton, Maryland, James Taylor Swan, of Carrollton, Pamela Riddle Cooper, of Hubbard, Donna Riddle, of Hubbard; and many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
