Son of Ebenezer Ball and Sarah "Sally" (Swift) Ball, who married July 10, 1814, Ware, Massachusetts.

Married his first cousin, Sarah Shattuck Walker, June 17, 1838, Somers, Connecticut. He was living in Paterson, New Jersey, at the time of the marriage. He was a skilled machinist who invented and patented many products. In Paterson, he devised and manufactured the machinery used in making Colt's pistols and other fire-arms.
